Most of the services provided by our organization are targeted at the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the provision of ICF-IID Group Homes, Day Programs, Adult Group Homes, Alternative Family Living arrangements, Innovations services, and respite services.
Additionally, we serve young children at our early learning center in Wayne County. In this setting we teach both typically developing children and children with developmental disabilities – or at risk for developmental issues. The children live and learn side by side and expand their learning horizons far beyond the typical child care setting. We also operate an after-school learning program for younger school-aged children, as well as a summer day camp experience for those enrolled in that program.

In this age of managed care, often needs that have typically been deemed important lose their value in the eyes of the payer. Items like some specialty medical services (i.e. podiatry), some adaptive equipment, some medical procedures, some prescribed medications, and some ordered medical treatments are no longer paid by Medicaid. The individuals we serve are predominantly Medicaid recipients, so these changes have had an adverse effect on their ability to receive all that they need. Especially for those who live in our residential facilities; they are only allowed to keep $30 a month of the benefits that they receive to use on personal items. These unpaid services are among the list of personal items. Yes, that was $30 a month to take care of personal items like toiletries, clothing, and anything out of the ordinary like unpaid medical bills. Just imagine living on $30 each month after your bills have been paid.

Our foundation pays for the unfunded needs of the individuals served by Skill Creations, Inc. The foundation has also been known to take care of some of the unfunded “wants” of the individuals served. Many of our clientele come from low income backgrounds and have few niceties in life, so when special circumstances arise we try to provide experiences that they may never have an opportunity for without the foundation.
Annually, the foundation provides Christmas gifts for those who do not have family contacts who can provide gifts, or who have not been covered under another organization’s holiday efforts, or who will simply be forgotten at Christmas otherwise.
The foundation has also assisted with environmental changes that benefit those that we serve. From structural changes at the person’s residence that assist them with adapting to a disability, to additions to playground equipment and instructional equipment at our early learning centers, these funds positively affect the lives of anyone and everyone that we serve.
